Glue traps are a cruel and indiscriminate method of pest control, causing immense suffering to rodents and other unintended victims. Advocates are calling on the British Columbia government to ban these inhumane devices and implement more ethical and effective alternatives.
The Hidden Cruelty of Glue Traps
Unlike snap traps, which can kill instantly, glue traps subject animals to prolonged distress. Once ensnared, rodents and other small animals experience extreme panic and injury as they struggle to escape. Many suffer from dehydration, starvation, or self-mutilation before succumbing to exhaustion or predation. Even if discovered while still alive, removing them from the adhesive is nearly impossible without causing further harm.
Glue traps do not discriminate. Birds, companion animals, and even endangered wildlife have been caught in these deadly adhesives, often resulting in painful injuries or death. The suffering inflicted is not only unnecessary but also fails to align with British Columbia’s progressive stance on animal welfare.
A Growing Call for a Ban
Several countries, including England, New Zealand, and Ireland, have already prohibited the sale and use of glue traps due to their extreme cruelty. In Canada, provinces like British Columbia have the opportunity to lead the way by implementing humane pest control policies. Animal advocacy organizations are urging the provincial government to take action and protect vulnerable wildlife and companion animals from these brutal traps.

Ethical Alternatives Exist
Effective pest control does not require inhumane methods. Humane alternatives such as exclusion techniques, live traps, and deterrents can address rodent issues without causing unnecessary suffering. These solutions not only respect non-human animals but also promote long-term effectiveness in managing pest populations.
The author does not support the use of fatal traps but does advocate for the humane and ethical relocation of rodent species when necessary. We live in their territories and must learn to coexist, but it is also essential to acknowledge the potential damage and medical concerns that can arise from their presence.
Take Action Today
British Columbians who oppose the use of glue traps are encouraged to contact their local representatives and demand a ban. Public pressure has led to policy changes before, and with enough voices speaking up, British Columbia can join the growing list of regions that prioritize humane treatment of all animals.
To support the movement, individuals can sign petitions, reach out to lawmakers, and educate their communities about the cruelty of glue traps. Every action taken moves the province closer to a future where compassion and effective pest control go hand in hand.
British Columbians can make their voices heard by emailing the Minister of Environment at ENV.Minister@gov.bc.ca and cc’ing their local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). MLA contact information can be found here.

There are so many other means of living peacefully in the same city as these animals. I would like it if the city were more supportive of humane property destruction management.
100% need to see municipal and provincial actions and education.
This is completely unnecessary and inhumane. Time to make some changes! These animals do not deserve this kind of slow death!!
We agree!
I hope you signed the petition and sent an email; its the biggest action we can take.
Please stop this atrocity
There's definitely a desire for change, just need the numbers to back up the petitions! Share this article so we can continue educating and supporting the petition and getting citizens to email the province.
